When it comes to home organization, many focus on the aesthetics - but how does it function?

The idea of "function follows form" suggests that how you set up your home should directly support your unique needs and routines. If your space is beautiful, but not practical for your life it can create frustration, inefficiency and even more clutter.

I love seeing a beautifully styled and organized space as much as anyone, but a great home doesn't mean that it works well for those who use it. If your entryway is stylish but lacks storage for shoes or keys, then the form is working against the function.

A well-organized home should simplify your daily tasks, reduce stress, and support your lifestyle. Rather than forcing yourself to maintain a space that looks good focus on creating a space that fits how you live.

Signs Your Home's Function Isn't Supporting You

  • You feel frustrated about everyday tasks like finding your keys

  • Clutter builds up in certain areas - that pile of mail or stack of papers signals your paper system isn't working.

  • You work around a space - if you have to clear a table or counter to use it that space isn't supporting you

How To Align Your Space And Needs

Take a quick walk around and identify those areas that cause you the most grief or slow you down. How can you prioritize your function in that space? Could a small intentional change make a big difference?

A hook for your keys, or a designated space for mail.

You don't have to overhaul everything to make your home function better for you.

Try to use what you have and see how it works before investing in more organizing solutions.

By focusing on the function of your space, you can create a home that makes your life easier and more enjoyable.
